- Oil pumps draw up the oil from the oil pan and pump it through oil filters and oil coolers to the engine lubricating points. The engine lubricating system is a self-contained system with tasks such as the lubrication of all sliding components, cooling of engine components, purging of deposits, carbon deposits and abrasion, damping of noises and vibrations, corrosion protection, and precision sealing (e.g. of the piston rings). In order to ensure sufficient cooling and lubrication, the oil pump must pump the entire oil volume through the engine 4 - 6 times per minute. It must also be designed in such a way that the lubricating points are supplied with oil as quickly as possible following a cold start, and that there is a sufficient flow rate even at low engine speeds. Due to recent strategies, such as the hydraulic valve clearance and camshaft compensation or cooled pistons, modern engines require disproportionately large volumetric flows of oil in the lower engine speed range in particular. In conventional, uncontrolled pumps, this leads to a considerable power loss through the direct connection to the engine speed in higher engine speed ranges. Mechanically or electrically controlled oil pumps enable a requirement-based, speed-independent flow rate and therefore a greater level of efficiency. This in turn enables the power consumption of a modern, electronically controlled oil pump to be reduced by up to 70%, saving up to 3% more fuel.

For this reason it may be necessary to replace the oil pump prematurely. Oil pump malfunctions are relatively rare. The pump system may be subject to wear at greater mileages. This is usually revealed by a reduced delivery rate. Oil pumps are usually replaced in full. Oil pumps are not intended to be reconditioned. Typical oil pump faults are excessive/insufficient oil pressure or oil leakages. Since operating the engine at an incorrect oil pressure can cause further damage, other components such as the turbocharger, camshaft, camshaft bearings, and vacuum pump also need to be checked depending on the damage symptoms.
