- The load in gasoline engines is usually controlled by throttling the intake air. The throttle valve enables this control. Further functions such as idle control, vehicle speed regulation, or anti-slip control can be implemented simultaneously. Even modern concepts such as gasoline engines with direct injection or the variable valve control system require a throttle valve for the "homogeneous mixture formation" or "residual gas control".
Diagnostic information
- Throttle valves are generally maintenance-free. Dirt is often to blame in the event of malfunctions, particularly in relation to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In this case it is absolutely necessary that the throttle valve be checked for soiling. If the intake air is extremely oily, deposits may reduce the flow area, the throttle valve may become sluggish, or the moving parts may become stuck. This oily intake air may be caused by leakages at the engine pistons or piston rings ("blow-by"), for example, through which gases can escape from the combustion chamber into the crankcase. The crankcase ventilation recirculates the gases from the crankcase to the engine for combustion. A result of this could be, for example, that the throttle valve no longer functions in the normal control range. This may then be detected by the OBD and displayed as a fault. Please also note: A faulty air mass sensor may transmit incorrect input signals to the engine control unit, which in turn results in incorrect actuation of the throttle valve. - Condition: New
