- Description: A lambda sensor measures the residual oxygen in the exhaust gas. In engine management, they are the most important elements for ensuring perfect engine running with low emissions. Several lambda sensors are often used in modern vehicles in order to meet legal requirements regarding exhaust gas purification or self diagnosis. This ranges from one lambda sensor per cylinder bank in V engines to one lambda sensor for each cylinder in a selective cylinder control system. Lambda sensors are principally used in gasoline engines, however are also used for the control of exhaust gases in diesel engines. Due to legal restrictions on exhaust emissions, the use of the lambda sensor in vehicles first became prevalent in the USA and then later in Europe.
Technical information
- The lambda sensor in front of the catalytic converter is known as a "control sensor". The lambda value (?) is determined using the signal from the control sensor. The engine management uses the lambda value to control the mixture composition. This has a major influence on the quality of the combustion and on the emission control through the catalytic converter. A faulty catalytic converter causes increased emission of pollutants. For this reason, a second lambda sensor behind the catalytic converter (monitor probe) constantly monitors the condition of the catalytic converter. The operating point lies between 550 °C and 700 °C.
Diagnostic information
- In engines, a sensor malfunction or fault results in increased fuel consumption as it is usually no longer possible to adjust the air-fuel ratio. CO2 emissions are also increased. In the event of a malfunction, the control unit activates the MIL (malfunction indicator lamp). - Condition: New
