The Audi 5000 is a midsize luxury car that was produced by Volkswagen’s Audi division from 1976 to 1988. Production of the Audi 100, 200, and 5000 spanned four model generations over the course of 26 years. The Audi 5000 was marketed under the second and third generations, named C2 and C3, respectively.
Audi 5000 C2 sales in North America surpassed 133,500. In 1980, a Turbo version of the Audi 5000 was introduced. It was built with a sportier suspension system, larger aluminum wheels, performance upgrades, and a three-speed automatic transmission. A Turbo diesel version of the Audi 5000 was also sold for the US market, available only with Audi’s “3+E” automatic transmission where “E” mode was a freewheel effect that reduced fuel consumption.
How Much Horsepower Does the Audi 5000 Have?
For the US market, four different powertrains were featured for the Audi 5000. The first engine was a 2.1-liter inline-five rated at 103 hp. A more powerful 2.1-liter inline-five was later introduced, making 130 hp. The 2.0-liter inline-five diesel produced the least output at 67 hp, while the 2.0-liter turbo diesel made 84 hp. For the Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro, however, a sportier engine was featured. The 1988 Audi 5000 Turbo Quattro came with a turbocharged inline-five engine that made as much as 162 hp.
