One of the meanest looking luxury crossovers in the market, the Volvo XC40 was introduced in late 2017. It is the first-ever Volvo to be based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, which is a shared platform with Geely and Lynk & Co. The XC40 was met with instant success, winning the European Car of the Year Award at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and the Car of the Year Japan award for 2019. It also dominates certain markets, such as South Korea where it is the best-selling premium compact SUV, and Europe, where it surpassed 100,000 units sold in 2020 and 2021.

The standard Volvo XC40 is powered by a 2-liter intercooled turbocharged engine accompanied by a 48-volt hybrid system. Overall power output of the compact SUV reaches 247 hp, while max torque is at 258 pound-feet. The XC40 is exclusively all-wheel drive (AWD) and comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. For gas mileage, it is rated for 24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

The 2025 Volvo XC40 comes in five different variants or “themes”: Core Bright, Plus Bright, Plus Dark, Ultra Bright, and Ultra Dark. Standard features include heated power front seats, a leatherette steering wheel, voice-activated automatic air-conditioning, City Block textile upholstery, carpet front and rear floor mats, and a voice-activated integrated navigation system. For entertainment, a Google-based 9-inch touchscreen is on the center of the dash and an eight-speaker high-performance sound system makes for an immersive in-cabin experience.

When to Replace Volvo XC40 Brakes

The 2025 Volvo XC40 comes standard with 13.6-inch front brake rotors and 11.9-inch rear rotors. In a disc brake, the brake pads often wear out earliest, at about 30,000 miles. Once the pad’s thickness reaches below one-eighth of an inch, then it’s time to replace the pads. In some cases, you might also need to replace the rotors when there is embedded material on them or when severely warped.
